Garbage Classification for a Green Campus

Time:November 19, 2015          Browse:

As much as garbage is acknowledged as a misplaced and misunderstood resource, the corresponding recycling and reuse is curbed by poor garbage classification. A themed event “A small step for garbage classification, a giant step for environmental protection”, affiliated to the “Green in Tongji , Youth in action” activities, was jointly hosted by the University League Committee and College of Transportation Engineering in both Siping Campus and Jiangding Campus, aimed to promote garbage classification and sustainability.

Volunteers first popularized the notion of classification via online Wechat, Qzone and questionnaires, followed by other forms like trash can transformation and giveaways on Wechat to raise students’ awareness to the value of classification.
“Sort me out”, a fun activity for science popularization in an attempt to invite the students to classify the garbage when throwing it in daily life and practicing the green campus principles, was launched simultaneously on the two campuses of Tongji University. By means of quiz games, participants were required to sign on the garbage classification initiative and to comprehend the significance of garbage sorting in those activities in order to practice it and contribute to the green campus.

The garbage classification campaign also went further into dormitories. At the advent of Club Day, students were invited to upload their pictures with the campaign panel to the social network sites as headshots to demonstrate their supports for environmental protection as well as promises to a greener Tongji, which was the most convincing environmental manifesto ever.
Volunteers took postage boxes, a commonly littered item in everyday life, as an example to illustrate garbage classification by setting special recycling bins among dormitories and mailrooms to recollect those discarded packing boxes and arranging the recycling process with relevant companies. By exchanging the cardboard boxes for bonsai, the students not only showed their concerns for the environment but also took action in order to convert ideas into reality.

As the theme of the event recited “a small step for garbage classification is a giant step for environmental protection”, there is still a long way to go before garbage classification gains ground.
Problems like lack of common sense for classification, frequent rubbish mixing up and low sensitivity to garbage sorting at hand were often seen among college students during the event. Therefore further campaign on new media platforms is demanded to demonstrate the necessity and promote good habit of garbage classification. We need to start making a difference close to home by practicing garbage classification in our daily life, rationalizing and conserving resources. After all, the dream of a green campus is in our own hands.
