Introduction to College of Electronic and Information Engineering (CEIE)

The College of Electronic and Information Engineering (CEIE) of Tongji University boasts five departments, namely: Department of Electrical Engineering,Department of Electronic Science and Technology, Department of Information and Communication Engineering,  Department of Control Science and Engineering, and Department of Computer Science and Technology. It also includes three centers: the CAD (Computer Aided Design) Research Center, the CIMS (Contemporary Integrated Manufacturing Systems) Research Center, and the Experimental Education Center.

CEIE covers a wide range of disciplines. At present, the College covers four first-level disciplines, namely: Electrical Engineering,Information and Communication Engineering,Control Science and Engineering and Computer Science and Technology. It confers doctoral degrees in Information and Communication Engineering, Control Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology ,and two second-level interdisciplinary doctoral programs, namely Microelectronic Science and Engineering , Intelligence Science and Technology. The latter was rated as a Shanghai Peak Discipline.

At CEIE, we offer a full spectrum of bachelor’s degree programs, with ten undergraduate majors on the computer and the electronic information platforms. The former offers such majors as Computer Science and Technology, Information Security, Data Science, and Big Data Technology. Among these, the majors of Automation and Computer Science and Technology were selected and assigned into the list of National First-class Undergraduate Development Sites in 2020, becoming the first batch of National First-Class Undergraduate Majors in the “Double Ten-Thousand Plan”. The latter includes such majors as Electronic Science and Technology, Communication Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Its Automation, Automation, Artificial Intelligence, and Microelectronic Science and Engineering.

The College is home to a total of 243 teachers. Over the years, CEIE has made significant progress in expanding its talent pool under the conceptual guidance of “talents introducing from outside and training from inside”. The development of CEIE high-end talent teams is attributable to the sound teaching and research talent structure.  Since 2015, CEIE has introduced 28 wide-ranging top talents, including a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 16 scholars from national and provincial/ministerial-level talent plans, and 11 high-end international experts.

There are 1,550 bachelor’s degree students, 1,005 master’s and 426 doctoral students as well as 36 international students at CEIE. About 463 prospective students of Year 2019 from the Freshmen College are about to join CEIE next year. The College is characterized by its reasonable robust education system and outstanding capacity in the management with global characteristics. The College renewed the agreements of PoliTong (a bachelor’s double-degree program (DDP) in Electronic Information and Engineering), AlmaTong (a bachelor’s DDP in Automation), and AlmaTong (a master’s DDP in Control) to strengthen the internationalization of talent cultivation with Italian universities such as Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino and the University of Bologna. It also expanded the master’s DDP in ICT (TeleTong) with the University of Bologna, the master’s DDP in Telecommunication with the Technical University of Munich, the master’s DDP with the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and the DDP with Telecom Paris of the Paris Institute of Technology. The PoliTong and AlmaTong joint international programs were approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE).

The college has won a wide range of both teaching and scientific awards. On the teaching side, over the past five years, the College has received one second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award; one grand prize, one first prize and one second prize of the Shanghai Teaching Achievement Award; and two first prizes of the Teaching Achievement Award of the Chinese Association of Automation. It has established three “new engineering” majors: Microelectronic Science and Engineering, Data Science and Big Data Technology, and Artificial Intelligence. MOE has approved the joint international programs of Automation (Sino-Italian) and Electronic Information Engineering (Sino-Italian). The majors in Computer Science and Technology, Automation, and Electrical Engineering and Its Automation have successively acquired professional engineering certifications. CEIE has set up a total of 17 national-level, provincial/ministerial-level courses of excellence. It has undertaken seven national teaching reform projects and 31 provincial/ministerial-level education reform projects. CEIE has now been ranked top three of teaching status for undergraduates and top five for postgraduates for several consecutive years.

In addition, in terms of research, the College has, over the past five years, chaired a number of major projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology, including nine key special projects, one major special project (Science and Technology Innovation 2030 - “New Generation of Artificial Intelligence”) and nine topics. A total of 114 projects were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including nine key projects and 78 general projects. In 2019, the total amount of research funds received by CEIE reached CNY 105 million. The College has won two second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award; two first prizes and four second prizes of the MOE; one Shanghai Outstanding Contributions to Science and Technology by Young Scholars Award, one first prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, one first prize of Shanghai Natural Science Award, two first prizes of Shanghai Technological Invention Award; one first prize and one second prize in Natural Science of CIE (The Chinese Institute of Electronics)  Science and Technology Award, and one first prize in Science and Technology Progress and one second prize in Natural Science of the Eighth Wu Wenjun Award for AI Science and Technology. Six new scientific research bases/platforms have been set up at the College. They are the Shanghai Network Information Service Engineering Technology Research Center, Shanghai E-Commerce and Information Service Collaborative Innovation Center, Shanghai Visual Perception Technology Innovation Service Platform, Shanghai Industrial Visual Perception and Intelligent Computing Engineering Technology Research Center, Shanghai Engineering Research Center for Blockchain Applications and Services, and Shanghai Blockchain Technology Research Center. The faculty has published 434 papers, including SCI Class I and Class II papers and those included as part of IEEE/ACM Transactions. CEIE houses 464 authorized patents, 96 overseas patent applications, and 22 books and textbooks.
