On May 27, 2026, the 90th Zhi Xin Forum was held in Lecture Hall 117 of the Zhi Xin Building. ProfessorChi K. Michael Tsefrom CityUniversity of Hong Kong, was invited to deliver a lecture titled “Negative Inductance: A Potential Game Change”.

In this talk, ProfessorTsefirst introduced the concept of negative inductance and its potential applications in areas such as power systems, wireless power transfer, and electromagnetic compatibility. He also pointed out the core challenges in promoting its use in the field of power electronics, including difficulties in achieving negative inductance in power-level scenarios, poor stability, and limited operating frequency. Professor Tse emphasized that although negative inductance, like conventional inductance, exhibits an impedance that increases linearly with frequency, it features a current that leads voltage by 90°, in sharp contrast to the lagging characteristic of conventional inductors. Moreover, negative inductance cannot exist as a passive component and must be synthesized using active circuits, which also distinguishes it fundamentally from capacitance. The presentation further focused on how to realize negative inductance for power applications, introducing the solution proposed by his research team. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach were validated through means such as simulation and measurement of negative inductance waveforms, as well as inductance cancellation tests.

After the report, Professor Tse had a warm exchange and discussion with the attending faculty and students on topics such as circuit implementation and application expansion of negative inductance. Drawing from his own experience, he also encouraged students to actively broaden their horizons, explore diligently, and discover and solve new scientific problems. This report further expanded the horizons of our university's faculty and students and deepened their understanding and knowledge of negative inductance technology.
