Batch Process Automation and Its Application

Time:December 2, 2025          Browse:

On December 1, 2025, the 85th Zhi Xin Forum was held in Lecture Hall 117 at the Zhi Xin Building, which was jointly organized by the College of Electronic and Information Engineering and Shanghai Institute of Intelligent Science and Technology of Tongji University. Prof. Furong Gao from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, was invited to give a lecture on “Batch Process Automation and Its Application’’.

In this report, Professor Gao introduced the research achievements of his team in batch process automation and its applications. Batch process is the preferred method for producing specialty chemicals or other high value-added products. The difference between continuous and batch processes requires the development of modeling, monitoring, control, and optimization methods that are coordinated with the characteristics of batch processes. In this report, Professor Gao used thermoplastic injection molding (a process that converts plastic particles into various molded parts) as an example to explain the characteristics of batch processes. Secondly, Professor Gao introduced the development of these automation methods by exploring or elaborating on the characteristics of batch processes. Thirdly, Professor Gao demonstrated the application of these methods in injection molding. Finally, Professor Gao put forward some personal views on the future development of batch process automation.

After the report, Prof. Gao had a cordial exchange and discussion with the participating teachers and students, and he also encouraged them to actively broaden their horizons, explore, discover and solve new scientific problems based on his own experience. This report further expanded the vision of our teachers and students and enhanced their understanding and knowledge of batch process automation.
