On Nov 10, 2025, the 84th Zhi Xin Forum was held in Lecture Hall 117 at the Zhixin Building, which was jointly organized by the College of Electronic and Information Engineering and Shanghai Institute of Intelligent Science and Technology of Tongji University. Prof.Volker Staudt fromRuhr-Universität Bochum, was invited to give a lecture on “Physics-driven modelling and control of systems containing grid-connected and/or machine-connected power-electronic converters”.

The presentation explored key aspects of physics-driven modeling and control, using practical, railway-oriented examples to illustrate challenges and solution strategies. Each example was paired with adapted control techniques and refined modeling approaches that address non-ideal effects in real-world systems. While most cases were railway-focused, the underlying principles are broadly applicable — particularly to converter control in renewable energy systems, such as wind and photovoltaic power generation. Among the highlights were energy-aware induction generator control, which enhances DC-link voltage stabilization, as well as sensorless control across the entire speed range and grid-friendly converter operation. These developments underscore EneSys’s pivotal role in bridging theory and practical application in modern energy system control, contributing to a more efficient and sustainable future.

After the report, Prof. Volker Staudt had a cordial exchange and discussion with the participating teachers and students, and he also encouraged them to actively broaden their horizons, explore, discover and solve new scientific problems based on his own experience. This report further expanded the vision of our teachers and students and enhanced their understanding and knowledge of Physics-driven modelling and control.
