Tongji University has a long history in its automation course. As early as 1912, the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering was established at Tongji Medical and Engineering School (the predecessor of Tongji University). The Department of Control Science and Engineering, on which the Automation Course is based, has an enormous disciplinary potentiality. In 2003, the Department was authorized to confer a doctoral degree in the broad academic discipline of Control Science and Engineering. In 2007, the second-level discipline of Control Theory and Control Engineering was rated as a key discipline at the Shanghai level and national level simultaneously. In 2012, the broad academic discipline of Control Science and Engineering became the first-class discipline in Shanghai’s colleges and universities.
Since entering the 21st century, the international cooperative education for substantial talent cultivation has been implemented in Automation Course. In November 2007, Tongji University signed an agreement with the University of Bologna, and both parties agreed to cooperate to offer the AlmaTong program (a bachelor’s double-degree program (DDP) for Automation Course). The program will, on the one hand, expand the cooperation between Chinese and Italian universities to train highly qualified international talents. On the other hand, it will further improve the development of disciplines and the level of scientific research in both universities and strengthen the extensive cooperation of both countries in the education and business sectors.
November 2011 witnessed the renewal ceremony between Tongji University and the University of Bologna, in which both parties agreed to continue to promote the AlmaTong Program. In October 2013, the Automation Course was approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE) as Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools program and officially included in the national college enrollment plan after six years of international DDP trial operation.
Automation Course is a four-year bachelor’s degree program, with students spending three years at Tongji University and one year at the University of Bologna. Upon graduation, students will receive double degrees of Bachelor of Engineering (BE) conferred by Tongji University and the University of Bologna.

The Electronic Information Engineering Course belongs to the Department of Information and Communication Engineering of the College of Electronics and Information Engineering (CEIE). It has accumulated high-quality education and teaching resources after a hundred years of specialty reform history. Tongji University has been expanding international cooperation based on its original professional foundation. The Electronic Information Engineering Course offered by Tongji University and Politecnico di Torino, one of the top 100 engineering colleges and universities in the world, combined the advantages of each party and considered the characteristics of the other party, forming a new professional training program that meets the requirements of both Chinese and Italian undergraduate degrees and adapts to the needs of modern engineering and industrial development.
Since 2006, the program has achieved fruitful results in student cultivation, curriculum setting, specialty course and Italian language teaching, and teacher exchange. It has gained strong support from Chinese and Italian governments, institutions, and enterprises, ensuring the sustainable development of this educational cooperation program and forming a distinctive Sino-Italian international cooperation engineering education model, which has a certain demonstration role in promoting the development of international engineering education and cultivating innovative engineering talents with global competitiveness.
Electronic Information Engineering Course is a four-year bachelor’s degree program. Students are required to complete the Sino-Italian cooperation course modules: a) spending three years at Tongji University and the fourth school year at the Politecnico di Torino; b) finishing graduation project at the Politecnico di Torino. Upon graduation, students will receive double degrees of Bachelor of Engineering (BE) conferred by Tongji University and Politecnico di Torino.
